    New York State Mandated Screenings

Each school year students have height, weight, vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings. Referrals will be issued to those students who do not meet the New York State Education Department's criteria for further assessment with your primary medical provider or specialist.

    New York State Mandated Physicals
NewYork State Education Law mandates that school physicals be given to all students who are in 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 10th grades, special education classes, and all new entrants. If you prefer to have your health care provider complete the physical, it must be turned in to the school nurse by September 20. Any health care provider physical completed after May 1 will be accepted. In accordance with New York State Education Law, the School District nurse practitioners will provide physicals for students who do not return a completed physical examination form.
     Immunizations
All students must have an up to date immunization record at the time of registration. Immunizations must be maintained throughout attendance according to New York State Education Department's Immunization Guidelines. Niagara County Health Department Children's Immunization Program provides immunizations to all children to age 18. Most immunizations are free of charge. An appointment can be made by calling 278-1903.
    Head Lice
In order to keep pediculosis transmission at a minimum in the school setting, it is the policy of Niagara Falls City School District to exclude all students with lice or nits. Each elementary student is assessed at the beginning of each school year and periodically throughout. Most importantly, if your child has lice, please inform the school nurse!!
     Illness
Please do not send your child to school when they are sick. Children who have fevers may not attend school. A fever helps to fight infection. Most fevers are not harmful, and may last up to 2 or 3 days. Use medication only if you child needs it. Never give your child aspirin. Always have your child drink a lot of fluids during times of illness to keep the body well hydrated. Call your child's Health Care Provider as needed.
     Medication
Medications can be administered to students in school by the school nurse with a Medication Authorization form completed by your child's Health Care Provider, and signed by a parent or guardian. This includes both prescription and over the counter medications. No cough drops are allowed. Medications must always be delivered by the parent or guardian, and properly labeled.
Any student who has a medical diagnosis that requires the administration of a medication in school, must have the completed
Medication Authorization form and medication in school to be eligible to participate in Physical Education.
