Close Reading Strategies
First Read: Getting the GIST
- Preview the text (How is it arranged- Titles, headings, maps, pictures, captions?)
- What's the Main Idea
- What do you notice?
- What grabs your attention?
- What is unclear? (Go back and reread multiple times)
Remember to Annotate the Text:
- Highlight /underline what grabbed your attention
- Color-code different characters to bring understanding and clarity
- Add notes to reference your thoughts
Third Read: Putting It All Together
Make sure to try and make connections?
- Text to Self
- Text To Text
- Text To World
How does the author support key points!
- What inferences can be made?
- Does it make you feel a certain way?
- Can you form an opinion?

Writing Goal: Responding to Literature using - RACE STRATEGY
As always, make sure to hand in quality work. Please take your time, reread your writing to make sure it makes sense, use complete sentences and check for proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. Also, make sure you're using the RACE Strategy whenever it is appropriate!
R- Restate the question
A- Answer the question in your own words
C- Cite 2-3 pieces of textual information (evidence / facts )
E- Explain your thinking about what the evidence shows you as a reader!

First:
- Please listen and track the text as it is being read aloud.
- Read punctuation, notice how her voice changes as she reads the text aloud.
- You can stop at the end of each page and practice reading smoothly, with intonation and expression.
Afterwards: Your Turn
- Pick your favorite text and read to a sibling, parent, or a friend!
- Practice your reading strategies!
- Make sure you're reading smoothly like you were talking.
- Make sure to change your voice when asking a question or reading an exclamation point.
- If you make a mistake, go back to the beginning of the sentence or paragraph and try again.

Grading
Grading:
Your writing prompts will be scored using the rubric.
There are three critical components:
- Conventions
- Focus
- Evidence
Your child is fully aware of how these rubrics are used to score their writing pieces. Students who complete all of our class expectations when reading and writing should have no problem achieving a proficient score. Therefore, please review the Reading and Writing guides on this page to remind your child when completing work.
