What is a School Social Worker and why are we important?

A school social worker provides counseling and psycho-social services to children and adolescents in schools at both micro and macro levels. Social workers work as mental health experts, leaders of social and emotional development within the school community, family-school liaisons, and program development experts.

Overall School Social Workers help parents, students, and school staff identify needs that interfere with learning and work with students to get the services they need. We work with general and special education students and their families to resolve social, emotional and behavioral problems.  We do this  through assessment, consultation with school staff and community providers, through development and implementation of behavior management plans, and providing indirect and direct services. We help to bridge school, home and community to help students be as successful as possible.

In addition, we are part of the special education team. We facilitate meetings, participate in assessments, communicate with parents/guardians, and serve as a resource to students, families and other school staff.

We also work with the families and student to ensure good attendance.

School Social Workers abide by values such as:

    • Each pupil is valued as an individual regardles of any unique characteristics
    • Each pupil should be allowed to participate in the learning process
    • Individual differences should be recognized
    • EACH child, regardless of race and socioeconomic characteristics, has the right to equal treatment in the school
